Renewing Your Georgia Commercial Driver's License

3 min read

If you operate commercial vehicles in Georgia, keeping your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) current is not only legally required—it’s essential for your career. Georgia commercial drivers must renew their CDL before it expires to avoid fines, suspensions, or being disqualified from driving commercially.

Renewal Timeline and Grace Period

Georgia CDLs are typically valid for eight years, but you should plan to renew at least 60 days before expiration to allow time for processing. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) does not offer a grace period for expired CDLs. Driving with an expired CDL can lead to penalties or even the loss of commercial driving privileges.

How to Renew Your CDL in Georgia

CDL renewals in Georgia must generally be done in person at a DDS Customer Service Center. Unlike standard driver’s licenses, CDLs require more stringent verification, especially for medical certification and federal compliance.

To begin the process:

  1. Schedule an appointment via the DDS Online Services.
  2. Bring all required documentation (see below).
  3. Pass a vision exam at the DDS office.
  4. Pay the applicable renewal fee.
  5. Submit a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT card) if required.

Required Documents

You’ll need to provide Secure ID documentation, which includes:

  • One document for identity and legal presence
  • One document for social security number
  • Two documents showing Georgia residency

Refer to the full list of Georgia Secure ID Documentation Requirements to make sure you bring the correct paperwork.

If your CDL includes a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Endorsement, you’ll also need to undergo a TSA security threat assessment and pass the HazMat knowledge test.

Medical Certification Compliance

To operate a commercial vehicle, you must have a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC) on file with Georgia DDS. This is required under federal law and applies to most CDL holders unless you qualify for an exemption.

Non-compliance can lead to a CDL downgrade. Stay informed about the latest medical certification rules at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Fees and Payment Options

The CDL renewal fee in Georgia is $32 for an 8-year license, with additional fees for certain endorsements (e.g., HazMat). DDS accepts multiple forms of payment at service centers, including credit/debit cards and checks.

Online CDL Renewal: Is It Possible?

Currently, online renewal is not available for commercial licenses in Georgia. CDL holders must appear in person to comply with federal requirements, including identity verification and medical certification.

Standard driver’s licenses, however, may be renewed online. For more details, check out Renewing Your Georgia Driver's License Online.

Updating Your Address and Replacing Lost CDLs

If your address changes, be sure to notify DDS within 60 days. Failing to do so could delay future CDL services. Learn how to Update Your Address on Georgia DMV Records.

If your CDL is lost or stolen, you'll need to Replace a Lost or Stolen Georgia Driver's License before driving again.

Need to Know Before You Go

Before visiting your DDS Customer Service Center:

  • Confirm hours and services available at your chosen location.
