Georgia Secure ID Documentation Requirements
Georgia’s Secure ID program complies with the federal Real ID Act, enhancing identity verification to improve security and streamline air travel and federal building access. Whether you're applying for your first Georgia driver’s license, renewing, or converting to a Real ID-compliant license, you'll need to provide specific documentation. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your visit to the Department of Driver Services (DDS).
What Is a Secure ID?
A Secure ID is Georgia’s Real ID-compliant credential. As of May 7, 2025, only Secure IDs or other federally approved identification (like a U.S. passport) will be accepted to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. Georgia began issuing Secure IDs in 2012.
You can identify a Secure ID by the gold or black star in the top right corner of the card.
Who Needs a Secure ID?
You need a Secure ID if:
- You're applying for your first Georgia license or ID card.
- You're renewing an existing license or ID card and want a Real ID-compliant version.
- You're converting an out-of-state license.
- You need to replace a lost or stolen license and want a Secure ID version.
