Georgia CDL Endorsements and Restrictions

4 min read

Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) in Georgia come with a variety of endorsements and restrictions that reflect a driver’s qualifications and limitations. These designations determine which types of commercial vehicles you may operate and under what conditions. Understanding these distinctions is essential for all current and prospective commercial drivers in Georgia.

CDL Endorsements in Georgia

Endorsements allow CDL holders to operate specialized types of commercial vehicles. To add an endorsement, drivers must pass additional knowledge and/or skills tests. Here are the primary endorsements available in Georgia:

  • H – Hazardous Materials (Hazmat): Required for transporting hazardous materials. Applicants must undergo a TSA background check and pass the Hazmat knowledge test.
  • N – Tank Vehicles: Required for driving a tank vehicle designed to carry liquids or gaseous materials.
  • P – Passenger Transport: Needed to operate a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver. Requires a skills test in a representative vehicle.
  • S – School Bus: Mandatory for operating a school bus. Applicants must first have the “P” endorsement and meet specific training and background requirements.
  • T – Double/Triple Trailers: Needed to pull double or triple trailers. Only applicable for Class A CDLs.
  • X – Combination of Tank Vehicle and Hazardous Materials: Grants both “N” and “H” endorsements.

CDL Restrictions in Georgia

Restrictions are limitations placed on a CDL based on the type of vehicle used during testing or specific medical conditions. These include:

  • E – No Manual Transmission: Indicates the driver tested in a vehicle with an automatic transmission.
  • L – No Air Brake Equipped CMV: Given if the driver either fails the air brake knowledge test or does not test in a vehicle with air brakes.
  • Z – No Full Air Brake System: Similar to restriction L, but specific to partial air brake systems.
  • O – No Tractor-Trailer: Issued when the skills test was completed in a Class A vehicle that was not a tractor-trailer.
  • M – No Class A Passenger Vehicle: Indicates the driver cannot operate Class A passenger vehicles.
  • N – No Class B Passenger Vehicle: Prohibits operation of Class B passenger vehicles.

Removing restrictions typically requires re-testing in the appropriate vehicle type.

Applying for Endorsements and Removing Restrictions

To apply for an endorsement or remove a restriction in Georgia, you must:

  1. Visit a DDS Customer Service Center in person.
  2. Provide required identification including proof of citizenship or lawful presence, residency, and your current CDL.
  3. Pass the relevant tests, both knowledge and skills if required.
  4. Pay applicable fees. For example, the Hazmat endorsement has additional costs due to the TSA background check.

Check Georgia Secure ID Documentation Requirements to ensure you bring the proper documents.

Important Considerations

  • Endorsements must be renewed alongside your CDL and may require retesting, such as Hazmat, which must be renewed every five years with a new background check.
  • Not all endorsements are available at every testing location. It's best to find Georgia DMV offices near you that offer specific testing services.
  • Georgia’s CDL program adheres to federal guidelines set by the FMCSA, ensuring compliance for interstate commercial drivers.
