Updating Your Address on Georgia DMV Records

3 min read

Georgia law requires drivers to notify the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) within 60 days of any address change. Updating your address ensures you receive important documents like license renewals, registration notices, and citations. Whether you’ve moved within the state or relocated from another, here’s everything you need to know about keeping your DMV records accurate.

Address Change Requirements

The address change requirement applies to:

  • Georgia driver’s licenses or permits
  • State-issued identification cards
  • Vehicle registration and titles

If your address is not current, you risk missing vital DMV communications and could face penalties for non-compliance.

How to Update Your Address

Online

The fastest and easiest way to update your address is through the Georgia DDS Online Services portal:

  • Visit dds.georgia.gov
  • Log in or create an account
  • Select “Change Address” under “My Services”
  • Follow the prompts and pay any applicable fee

This method is only available for non-commercial driver’s licenses and IDs.

In Person

You can also visit a Georgia DDS customer service center to complete your address change. Bring the following:

  • Your current Georgia driver's license or ID
  • Proof of your new residential address (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)

Use this guide to find Georgia DMV offices near you.

By Mail

For some special circumstances, you may submit a change of address by mail. Contact DDS customer service for eligibility and specific instructions.

Vehicle Registration Address Update

Changing the address on your driver’s license does not automatically update the address for your vehicle registration. To update your vehicle address:

  • Visit the Georgia Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division at eservices.drives.ga.gov
  • Log into your account
  • Navigate to your vehicle profile and update your address accordingly

Failure to update your vehicle registration could result in missed renewal notices. Here's more on renewing your Georgia vehicle registration.

Fees and Processing Time

Updating your address online or in person is free if you are not requesting a replacement license. If you need a new license showing your updated address, a $5 replacement fee applies.

Processing typically takes:

  • Immediate for online updates without a replacement card
  • 7-10 business days to receive a new card by mail

Check out Georgia DMV fees and penalties for the most current information.

Secure ID and Proof of Residency

If you are upgrading to a Secure ID-compliant license (Real ID), you must present specific documents. Accepted proof includes:

  • Utility bill dated within the last 60 days
  • Bank statement
  • Rental or lease agreement

Refer to this Georgia Secure ID Documentation Requirements guide for full details.

Important Notes for CDL Holders

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders must visit a DDS office in person to update their address and must present additional documentation depending on their CDL class and endorsements. See the steps to obtain a CDL in Georgia for more details.

Stay Current, Stay Compliant

Timely address updates ensure legal compliance and seamless service from Georgia DDS. Take a few minutes to verify that your address is current, especially if you've recently moved, changed apartments, or plan to travel for extended periods.
