Applying for a Georgia Learner's Permit

If you're a Georgia resident aged 15 or older, obtaining a Class CP Learner’s Permit is your first step toward independent driving. This permit allows you to practice driving under supervision and is part of Georgia’s graduated licensing system under the Teenage & Adult Driver Responsibility Act (TADRA).

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a Georgia learner’s permit, you must:

  • Be at least 15 years old.
  • Pass a vision exam.
  • Pass a knowledge exam covering road signs and driving laws.
  • Have a parent, guardian, or authorized driving instructor present to sign your application if you're under 18. They must provide documentation proving their relationship to you.

Required Documents

Bring the following to your local Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) Customer Service Center:

  • Proof of Identity: Original birth certificate or valid U.S. passport.
  • Proof of Social Security Number: Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub with full SSN.
  • Two Proofs of Georgia Residency: Utility bill, bank statement, or school record with your name and Georgia address.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence: Typically satisfied with your birth certificate or passport.
  • Certificate of School Enrollment (DS-1): Signed and notarized by your school, valid for 30 days.
  • Permit Fee: $10, payable by cash or credit card.

Ensure all documents are original or certified copies. Photocopies are not accepted.

Testing Requirements

  • Vision Exam: Conducted at the DDS center to ensure you meet the minimum vision standards.
  • Knowledge Exam: A two-part written test covering road signs and driving laws. Study the Georgia Driver's Manual and consider taking practice tests to prepare.

Tests are administered on a walk-in basis. Arrive at least 30 minutes before closing to ensure you have enough time to complete the exams.

Permit Conditions

With a Class CP Learner’s Permit:

  • You may drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old, seated beside you, and capable of exercising control over the vehicle.
  • The permit is valid for two years.
  • You must hold the permit for at least one year and one day before applying for a Class D Provisional License.
