Getting an Ohio Motorcycle Endorsement

3 min read

Riding a motorcycle in Ohio requires adding a motorcycle endorsement (Type 2) to your existing driver’s license. This involves meeting age requirements, completing mandatory training, passing knowledge and skills tests, and paying applicable fees through the Ohio BMV.

Eligibility and Requirements

To obtain a motorcycle endorsement in Ohio, you must:

  • Hold a valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • Be at least 15½ years old to apply for a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC).
  • Pass the motorcycle knowledge test at an Ohio BMV location.
  • Complete a vision screening.

Those under 18 are required to complete a Motorcycle Ohio Basic Rider Skills (BRS) course before testing for the endorsement.

Temporary Permit (TIPIC) for Motorcycles

You must first obtain a motorcycle TIPIC before you can take your skills test. The TIPIC is valid for one year, allowing you to practice riding with certain restrictions, such as no passengers and no riding after dark.

For those who are new to Ohio’s licensing system, you may want to review Getting an Ohio Learner Permit and Applying for an Ohio Driver’s License to understand the initial steps before endorsement.

Motorcycle Knowledge Test

The motorcycle knowledge test includes 40 multiple-choice questions covering safe riding practices, handling hazards, and Ohio motorcycle laws. Study the Ohio Motorcycle Operator’s Manual carefully before testing. You can also refer to Ohio Learner Permit Test Prep Tips to improve your test readiness.

Skills Test or Course Waiver

After holding your motorcycle TIPIC, you must complete the on-cycle skills test unless you successfully complete the Motorcycle Ohio BRS course, which provides a waiver for the skills test when presented with your course completion certificate at the BMV.

Documentation and Fees

When you are ready to add the motorcycle endorsement to your Ohio license, bring:

  • Proof of completion of the skills test or course waiver.
  • Your valid TIPIC and driver’s license.
  • Required documents for identification if updating license details.

Fees vary based on age and license renewal cycles. Check current fees on the Ohio BMV official website.

If you need to replace or renew your license while adding the endorsement, refer to Renewing or Replacing Ohio Driver’s License for details on fees and document requirements.

Safety and Continued Learning

Consider taking additional advanced rider training courses to enhance your safety on Ohio roads, especially with varying weather conditions. Also, familiarize yourself with Ohio Road Signs You Must Know to improve your readiness for both your skills test and safe riding.

Once you complete the required testing and pay your fees, your motorcycle endorsement will be added to your Ohio driver’s license, allowing you to legally operate motorcycles statewide while enjoying the freedom of riding safely.
