Updating Your Ohio Address on License
Ohio law requires drivers to update their address with the Ohio BMV within 10 days of moving. Keeping your address current ensures you receive important documents like renewal notices and avoids potential penalties or delays in processing your license or vehicle registration.
Who Needs to Update Their Address
Anyone holding an Ohio driver’s license, commercial license, or ID card must update their address if they move within Ohio or move into Ohio from another state. Address updates apply to learner permit holders, new licensees, and CDL holders.
If you are planning to apply for your first license, see Applying for an Ohio Driver’s License to ensure your address is correctly listed during your application.
When You Must Update
You must update your address within 10 days of your move. Failing to do so may result in missed renewal notices, suspended license issues, or complications with law enforcement if your address does not match your identification.
How to Update Your Address
You can update your address with the Ohio BMV in three main ways:
1. Online
Visit the Ohio BMV Address Update Portal. You will need:
- Your Ohio driver’s license or ID card number
- The last four digits of your SSN
- Your new address details
After submission, the BMV will update your record, but you will not automatically receive a new license unless you request a replacement.
2. By Mail
Download and complete the Change of Address Form (BMV 5756), available on the Ohio BMV forms page. Mail the completed form to:
Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 16520
Columbus, OH 43216-6520
3. In Person
You may visit any Ohio BMV location to complete your address update. Bring your current license and proof of your new address, such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement.
If you wish to receive a new physical card reflecting your updated address, you will need to pay the replacement license fee. See Renewing or Replacing Ohio Driver’s License for detailed instructions.
Required Documents
When updating in person, acceptable proofs of address include:
- Utility bill (dated within 60 days)
- Bank statement
- Lease agreement
- Mortgage documents
- Ohio vehicle registration with your new address
You may review additional document options in Ohio License Document Requirements.
Fees for Updating Address
Updating your address alone is free. However, if you request a new driver’s license card with your updated address, standard replacement fees apply. Review the current fee breakdown on the Ohio DMV Fees and Charges Breakdown.
Additional Notes for Learner Permit Holders
Permit holders must also update their address within 10 days to avoid issues with testing and renewal eligibility. If you are preparing for your road test or need to renew your permit, see Renewing Your Ohio Learner Permit.
