Renewing or Replacing Ohio Driver’s License

3 min read

Ohio drivers are required to renew their driver’s license every four years, with the option to renew up to 180 days before expiration. If your license is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must replace it promptly to stay legally compliant while driving in Ohio.

Renewal Options in Ohio

You can renew your Ohio driver’s license in person at a BMV office or online if eligible. Online renewal requires your current license to be valid and your address to remain unchanged. If you need to update your address during renewal, see updating your Ohio address on license.

Ohio now issues REAL ID-compliant licenses, known as “compliant cards,” which require additional documentation, including proof of identity, legal presence, Social Security number, and Ohio residency. You can find detailed document requirements in Ohio license document requirements.

Fees for Renewal and Replacement

Ohio charges $27.75 for a standard four-year driver’s license renewal, with fees payable by cash, card, or check at your local BMV. A replacement license due to loss or damage costs $26.50. For a full breakdown of potential fees you may encounter, visit Ohio DMV fees and charges breakdown.

You can pay fees online or in person, depending on your transaction, as explained in paying Ohio DMV fees online and in person.

What to Bring for Renewal or Replacement

For in-person renewal or replacement, bring:

  • Current driver’s license (if available)
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Two documents proving Ohio residency
  • Proof of legal presence (passport or birth certificate)

If replacing a lost or stolen license, you may need to complete an affidavit confirming the loss. Forms for these situations are available on the Ohio BMV official site.

Special Situations

  • Senior drivers over 65 must renew in person and may have additional vision screening requirements, detailed in Ohio senior driver renewal requirements.
  • Military members stationed outside Ohio may renew by mail; contact the Ohio BMV for details on your eligibility.
  • If your license has been expired for more than six months, you will need to present all required documents and may need to retake the vision screening or knowledge test.

Replacing Your License Quickly

If you lose your license, it is advisable to replace it immediately to avoid citations while driving without valid proof of licensing. You can apply for a duplicate online if you meet eligibility requirements, or visit a BMV office for expedited processing. Carry another form of ID until your new license arrives.
