Minnesota Name Change on License
If you’ve legally changed your name in Minnesota, you are required to update your name on your driver’s license or ID card through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS). This update ensures that your state-issued identification reflects your correct legal identity.
When to Update Your Name
You must update your name on your Minnesota driver’s license or ID card within 30 days of the legal name change. This applies whether your name change is due to marriage, divorce, adoption, court order, or other legal reasons.
Legal Documents Required
To change your name on your license, you’ll need to bring original or certified copies of supporting legal documents, which may include:
- Marriage certificate
- Divorce decree (must specifically state your name is being restored)
- Court order for name change
- Adoption papers
These documents must show both your previous and new legal names.
You’ll also need to present identity and residency documents. Refer to the Documents Needed for Minnesota License Application for a full list of acceptable forms.
How to Change Your Name on Your License
You must visit a Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) office in person. The name change process cannot be completed online or by mail.
Steps:
- Locate a nearby office using Minnesota DMV Office Locations and Hours.
- Bring your current driver’s license or ID card.
- Provide legal documents proving your name change.
- Pay the applicable fee (see Minnesota DMV Fees Explained).
- Have a new photo taken.
- Receive a temporary paper license; your new card will arrive by mail within a few weeks.
REAL ID Considerations
If you’re updating to a REAL ID-compliant license at the same time, additional documentation is required. Learn more at Minnesota Real ID License Requirements.
Name Change and Other Records
Updating your driver’s license does not automatically update other records, such as vehicle registration or title. These must be updated separately at your local DVS office.
Final Notes
- Name changes cannot be processed online.
- Your Social Security record must also be updated before changing your license name. Visit ssa.gov to update your Social Security information.
- It is recommended to notify other agencies (banks, employers, insurance providers) promptly after updating your license.
