Minnesota Real ID License Requirements

3 min read

Minnesota residents have the option to apply for a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card. A Real ID is a federally accepted form of identification that will be required to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities starting May 7, 2025. This license is not mandatory for driving but is necessary for certain federal purposes.

Who Needs a Real ID?

While you are not legally required to get a Real ID, it becomes essential if you:

  • Want to board domestic flights without a passport after May 7, 2025
  • Need to access federal buildings or military bases
  • Don’t already have another federally accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport or passport card

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a Minnesota Real ID, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Be a resident of Minnesota
  • Have no disqualifying suspensions or revocations on your license

You must apply in person at a Minnesota DMV office, as online applications are not permitted for first-time Real ID issuance.

Required Documents

Applicants must provide specific documentation from four categories:

  1. Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. passport, certified birth certificate)
  2. Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2 form)
  3. Two proofs of Minnesota residency (e.g., utility bills, lease agreements)
  4. Proof of lawful status (often the same as identity documentation)

For a full list of acceptable documents, check out Documents Needed for Minnesota License Application.

Application Process

  1. Collect all required documents
  2. Visit a local DMV office
  3. Complete the application form (available at Minnesota Driver License Application Forms)
  4. Pay the appropriate fee (more on that below)
  5. Have your photo taken

Your Real ID will be mailed to you within 4 weeks. You may receive a temporary paper license during the interim.

Fees

The cost of a Real ID is the same as a standard driver’s license renewal or replacement. For the most up-to-date fee schedule, visit Minnesota DMV Fees Explained.

Important Notes

  • A Real ID does not replace a passport for international travel
  • If your name has changed (e.g., due to marriage), bring supporting documents like a marriage certificate
  • You can upgrade to a Real ID during your regular renewal cycle or sooner by paying a duplicate fee
