How to Get a Minnesota Driver License

3 min read

To get a driver license in Minnesota, applicants must meet eligibility requirements, provide necessary documentation, and pass written, vision, and road tests. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) manages this process through its Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) division.

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a full Class D driver license in Minnesota without a learner's permit. Teens under 18 must follow the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, starting with an instruction permit. Learn more about the Minnesota Provisional License Process if you're under 18.

Step 2: Choose Between a Standard and REAL ID

Minnesota offers both standard licenses and REAL ID-compliant licenses. A REAL ID is federally compliant and will be required for domestic air travel and entering federal facilities without a passport after May 7, 2025. Learn about Minnesota Real ID License Requirements to decide which version suits your needs.

Step 3: Gather Required Documents

Applicants need to provide proof of identity, date of birth, social security number, and two proofs of Minnesota residency. A complete list is available in the Documents Needed for Minnesota License Application resource.

Step 4: Pass the Knowledge and Vision Tests

Before receiving a license, applicants must pass a knowledge test on Minnesota traffic laws, signs, and safe driving practices, as well as a standard vision test. For study help, review the Minnesota Knowledge Test Study Guide.

Appointments for the knowledge test can be scheduled at DVS exam stations. Bring all necessary documents when testing.

Step 5: Take the Road Test

After passing the knowledge test and completing any required behind-the-wheel training (for teens or permit holders), you must pass the road test. For advice on test-day readiness, visit Minnesota Road Test Preparation Tips.

The test evaluates your ability to drive safely, obey traffic laws, and perform basic maneuvers such as parking, turning, and lane changes.

Step 6: Pay Fees and Receive Your License

After passing all required tests, you’ll pay the applicable fees and receive a temporary paper license. The permanent license will be mailed to your address. You can find current pricing in the Minnesota DMV Fees Explained.
