Minnesota Address Change on License
Minnesota law requires all licensed drivers to update their address with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) within 30 days of moving. This regulation ensures that your license and DMV records remain accurate, which is essential for receiving renewal notices, legal correspondence, and any official documentation related to your driving privileges.
Who Needs to Change Their Address
You must update your address if:
- You have moved to a new residential address within Minnesota.
- You are temporarily relocating (if you'll be at the temporary address long enough to receive DMV correspondence).
- You have changed your mailing address even if your residence remains the same.
Methods to Update Your Address
Minnesota offers several ways to update your address:
Online
You can use the Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) online address change system if you hold a standard driver’s license, Real ID, or enhanced driver’s license. This is the most convenient method and usually takes effect within one business day.
In Person
If you prefer or are required to visit a DVS office, bring your current driver’s license or ID and proof of your new address. Acceptable documents include a lease agreement, utility bill, or bank statement with your name and new address. You can find your nearest location with this list of Minnesota DMV Office Locations and Hours.
By Mail
You can also complete an address change by sending a written request to:
Driver and Vehicle Services
445 Minnesota Street, Suite 190
St. Paul, MN 55101-5190
Include your full name, date of birth, driver's license number, old and new address, and signature.
Does It Cost Anything?
There is no fee for changing your address if you're not ordering a new physical license. However, if you want a new card reflecting the updated address, you must apply for a duplicate license and pay a replacement fee. Visit the Minnesota DMV Fees Explained page for current costs.
Do You Need a New License?
Not necessarily. If you're only updating the address in state records and not requesting a physical license with the new address printed on it, no new license is required. However, many drivers choose to get a new card for consistency. To request one, you must visit a DVS office with the appropriate documentation.
Updating Address for Vehicle Registration
Changing your address for your driver’s license does not automatically update your vehicle registration. To change your address for vehicle registration, visit the How to Register Your Car in Minnesota page and follow the process separately.
Real ID and Enhanced License Holders
If you have a Real ID or Enhanced Driver’s License and need a new card with your updated address, you must visit a DVS office in person and bring the required documentation. Review Minnesota Real ID License Requirements to ensure you bring valid documents.
