How to Register Your Car in Minnesota

3 min read

Registering your vehicle in Minnesota is a legal requirement for all residents who purchase a car or move to the state. The process is managed by the Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Who Needs to Register

You must register your vehicle in Minnesota if:

  • You purchase a vehicle from a dealership or a private party.
  • You relocate to Minnesota and bring a vehicle from another state.
  • You receive a vehicle as a gift, inheritance, or part of a divorce settlement.

Initial Registration Process

To register your car for the first time in Minnesota, follow these steps:

1. Gather Required Documents

You’ll need to provide the following:

  • A valid driver’s license or state-issued ID
  • The vehicle’s title, signed by the seller (if applicable)
  • A completed Application to Title and Register a Motor Vehicle (Form PS2000)
  • Proof of auto insurance
  • Odometer disclosure statement (for vehicles under 10 years old)
  • Bill of sale (if applicable)

2. Vehicle Inspection (Out-of-State Vehicles)

If your vehicle was previously titled out-of-state, a physical inspection may be required to verify the VIN. This is typically done by a DVS employee or a police officer. Learn more from Minnesota Vehicle Inspection Stations.

3. Pay Registration Fees

Registration fees in Minnesota vary depending on vehicle age, weight, and type. These include:

  • Registration tax (based on vehicle’s value)
  • Title fee
  • Plate fee
  • Filing fee
  • Wheelage tax (county-dependent)

Registration for New Residents

New Minnesota residents must register their vehicles within 60 days of moving to the state. You'll need to surrender your out-of-state title, complete the application form, and follow the standard registration steps.

License Plates and Stickers

You’ll receive new Minnesota license plates and registration stickers once your application is processed. Stickers must be placed on the rear plate and renewed annually.

Temporary Permits

If you need to drive your vehicle before full registration is complete, you can apply for a temporary permit valid for 21 days. This is especially useful when waiting on title transfers or inspections.

Renewing Registration

Vehicle registration in Minnesota must be renewed every year. Renewal notices are mailed, but you can also check your status and renew online. For more, see the Minnesota Registration Renewal Guide.
