Renewing Your Kentucky Commercial Driver's License
Kentucky commercial drivers must renew their Commercial Driver's License (CDL) every eight years. Timely renewal ensures you stay compliant with both federal and state transportation laws, which is especially important for professional drivers who depend on their CDL for employment.
When to Renew
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) requires CDL holders to renew before their license expires. Renewal notices are usually mailed, but it’s the driver’s responsibility to track the expiration date. You can renew your CDL up to six months before it expires.
If your CDL expires, you may not legally operate a commercial motor vehicle, and depending on how long it's expired, you may need to retake knowledge or skills tests.
Where to Renew
CDL renewals must be done in person at a regional KYTC Driver Licensing Office. You can find a convenient location and available services through this guide on Finding Kentucky DMV Locations and Hours.
Appointments are often required. Visit the KYTC online portal for Scheduling Appointments at Kentucky DMV Offices.
What You Need to Bring
When renewing your CDL, bring the following:
- Your current Kentucky CDL
- One acceptable form of identification (e.g., birth certificate or passport)
- Proof of Kentucky residency (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.)
- Your Social Security number
- Valid medical certificate (if applicable)
- Payment for renewal fees
For a breakdown of accepted payment options, refer to Payment Methods Accepted by Kentucky DMV.
Medical Certification Requirements
All CDL holders must comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) medical certification requirements. If you operate in non-excepted interstate or intrastate commerce, you must provide a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate (Form MCSA-5876) upon renewal.
Failure to maintain a current medical certificate can result in a downgrade of your CDL.
Vision Testing
You’ll be required to pass a vision screening during the renewal process. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, make sure to bring them to your appointment. You can learn more about the testing requirements here: Vision Test Requirements for License Renewal in Kentucky.
CDL Endorsements and HazMat Renewal
Endorsements such as HazMat (H), Tankers (N), or Passenger (P) may require additional testing or TSA background checks at the time of renewal. HazMat holders must retake the written test and complete a background check every five years, even if your CDL has a longer validity period. Learn more about endorsements at Kentucky CDL Endorsements and Restrictions.
CDL Renewal Fees
The cost to renew a standard Kentucky CDL is $84. Additional fees apply for each endorsement. Details on current fees are available at Understanding Kentucky DMV Fees.
Be sure to bring a form of accepted payment such as a credit/debit card or money order.
Penalties for Expired CDLs
Driving with an expired CDL is illegal and can result in fines, penalties, and disqualification. If your CDL is expired for more than one year, you may have to retake all required tests, including the road skills exam.
Staying proactive and informed is essential to maintaining your commercial driving privileges in Kentucky. Always monitor your expiration date and schedule your renewal in advance.
