Renewing Your Indiana Driver's License

3 min read

Renewing your Indiana driver’s license is a crucial task to ensure you maintain your legal driving privileges. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) offers several convenient options for renewing your license, whether online, in person, or by mail. This guide covers eligibility requirements, documents needed, fees, and special considerations for Real ID and age-related renewals.

When to Renew

Indiana driver's licenses are typically valid for six years for drivers under 75. The renewal window opens 24 months before the expiration date. For drivers aged 75 to 84, licenses are valid for three years, and for those 85 and older, licenses expire every two years.

You should also renew early if:

  • You’re upgrading to a Real ID-compliant license.
  • Your license is lost, damaged, or stolen.
  • Your personal information has changed.

Renewal Methods

Online Renewal

You may renew online at myBMV.com. Online renewal is available if:

  • Your license is not expired for more than 180 days.
  • You are a U.S. citizen.
  • You do not need to update your name or residential address.
  • You renewed in person the last time.

You’ll need your driver’s license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and a valid credit or debit card.

In-Person Renewal

If you’re not eligible to renew online, or if you want to upgrade to a Real ID, visit a BMV branch. Find the nearest location using this guide: Finding Indiana BMV Branches and Kiosks.

Bring the following:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Proof of identity, lawful status, Social Security number, and Indiana residency (for Real ID)
  • Payment for the renewal fee

Review the Indiana Real ID Requirements Explained to ensure you bring the correct documentation.

Mail Renewal

Some drivers, especially military personnel and out-of-state residents, may qualify to renew by mail. Contact the BMV directly to determine your eligibility and required documents.

Fees

License renewal fees vary by age:

  • Under 75: $17.50
  • Age 75 to 84: $11.00
  • Age 85 and older: $7.00

Additional fees may apply if you are upgrading to a Real ID or if your license is expired. You can view a complete breakdown here: Indiana BMV Fee Schedule Overview.

Updating Your Information

If you need to update your address, name, or other personal details, you must do so during renewal or separately via the BMV. Read more about how to Update Personal Information with Indiana BMV.

Late Renewals and Reinstatements

If your license has been expired for more than 180 days, you must pass a vision screening and possibly a written knowledge test. For drivers whose license has been expired for more than three years, both the knowledge and skills tests are required. Learn more at Preparing for the Indiana Driver's Knowledge Test.

Special Considerations

  • Military Members: May qualify for extensions. Submit a Military Extension Letter to maintain valid driving privileges while deployed.
  • Medical Conditions: Certain conditions may require medical documentation before renewal.
  • Real ID: After May 7, 2025, a Real ID is required to board domestic flights and access federal facilities. See the Real ID Requirements.

Renewing your license on time helps you stay compliant with Indiana laws and avoid fines or suspensions. Whether you choose to renew online, in person, or by mail, preparing the right documents and understanding the process will ensure a smooth experience.
