Updating Personal Information with Indiana BMV

3 min read

Keeping your personal information up to date with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is essential to ensure compliance with state laws and to avoid penalties or disruptions in services. Whether you've changed your name, moved to a new address, or need to update other personal details, the BMV provides several ways to handle these updates.

Name Changes

If you legally change your name due to marriage, divorce, or court order, you must update your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA) before notifying the Indiana BMV. Once your SSA record is updated (allow at least 24 hours), you can then proceed with updating your name at the BMV.

Required Documents

To change your name at the BMV, bring the following:

  • Certified proof of the name change (e.g., marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order)
  • Current driver's license or ID
  • Proof of updated SSA record

You must visit a BMV branch in person to complete a name change. There is no fee for updating the name, but you may have to pay for a new license or ID card.

Address Changes

Indiana law requires you to notify the BMV of an address change within 30 days of moving. This applies to your driver's license, identification card, and vehicle registration.

How to Update Your Address

You can update your address:

  • Online via your myBMV account
  • By mail using the Change of Address form
  • In person at any BMV branch

Make sure to update both your license/ID and your vehicle registration. If you request a replacement license with your new address, a standard replacement fee applies.

Common BMV Forms and Their Uses in Indiana

Gender Marker Updates

Indiana residents can request a change to the gender marker on their driver’s license or ID. This requires completing the appropriate BMV form and submitting a signed statement from a licensed physician.

Visit a BMV branch with:

  • Completed Gender Designation Form (State Form 55617)
  • Physician’s signature and license number
  • Current ID or driver’s license

Updating Other Personal Details

For corrections to date of birth or Social Security number:

  • You must bring original or certified documents (birth certificate, Social Security card)
  • Visit a BMV branch in person

These changes cannot be made online or by mail.

If you are an active-duty military member or a resident temporarily living out of state, you may still update your address online. Additional considerations or documentation may be required for name changes in these cases. Contact the BMV or visit BMV Military Resources for guidance.

Failing to update your information within the required timeframe may result in:

  • Missed renewal notices or legal notifications
  • Fines or penalties
  • Delayed processing of registration or license services
