Indiana Chauffeur License Application Guide
In Indiana, individuals seeking to operate certain vehicles for hire must obtain a For-Hire Endorsement on their driver's license. This endorsement has replaced the traditional chauffeur and public passenger chauffeur licenses since January 1, 2017.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a For-Hire Endorsement in Indiana, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Hold a valid Indiana driver's license for more than one year.
- Pass the for-hire knowledge examination.
- Undergo a standard vision screening.
Note: There are no provisions for waiving age or experience requirements for this endorsement.
Vehicles Requiring a For-Hire Endorsement
A For-Hire Endorsement is necessary for operating:
- Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) between 16,000 and 26,000 pounds used to transport property.
- Vehicles designed to transport fewer than 16 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.
Exceptions include:
- Operating medical services vehicles.
- Transporting recreational vehicles before their first retail sale under specific weight conditions.
Application Process
- Study the Indiana Driver's Manual: The for-hire knowledge exam is based on this manual.
- Visit a BMV Branch: Schedule an appointment at a local Indiana BMV branch.
- Pass Required Examinations:
- Vision Screening: Conducted at the BMV branch.
- For-Hire Knowledge Exam: Tests knowledge of Indiana traffic laws and safe driving practices.
- Pay the Endorsement Fee: A $19 fee is charged when adding the for-hire endorsement for the first time.
Transferring an Out-of-State Chauffeur’s License
New Indiana residents holding a valid chauffeur's or public passenger chauffeur's license from another state can transfer their credentials by:
- Passing the for-hire knowledge exam.
- Applying for the for-hire endorsement at an Indiana BMV branch.
Renewal and Replacement
- Renewal: The for-hire endorsement is valid for the same period as the driver's license. Renewals can be done at any BMV branch or online up to one year before expiration.
- Replacement: If the license is lost, stolen, or mutilated, a replacement must be obtained in person at a BMV branch.
