Indiana Chauffeur License Application Guide

2 min read

In Indiana, individuals seeking to operate certain vehicles for hire must obtain a For-Hire Endorsement on their driver's license. This endorsement has replaced the traditional chauffeur and public passenger chauffeur licenses since January 1, 2017.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a For-Hire Endorsement in Indiana, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Hold a valid Indiana driver's license for more than one year.
  • Pass the for-hire knowledge examination.
  • Undergo a standard vision screening.

Note: There are no provisions for waiving age or experience requirements for this endorsement.

Vehicles Requiring a For-Hire Endorsement

A For-Hire Endorsement is necessary for operating:

  • Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) between 16,000 and 26,000 pounds used to transport property.
  • Vehicles designed to transport fewer than 16 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.

Exceptions include:

  • Operating medical services vehicles.
  • Transporting recreational vehicles before their first retail sale under specific weight conditions.

Application Process

  1. Study the Indiana Driver's Manual: The for-hire knowledge exam is based on this manual.
  2. Visit a BMV Branch: Schedule an appointment at a local Indiana BMV branch.
  3. Pass Required Examinations:
    • Vision Screening: Conducted at the BMV branch.
    • For-Hire Knowledge Exam: Tests knowledge of Indiana traffic laws and safe driving practices.
  4. Pay the Endorsement Fee: A $19 fee is charged when adding the for-hire endorsement for the first time.

Transferring an Out-of-State Chauffeur’s License

New Indiana residents holding a valid chauffeur's or public passenger chauffeur's license from another state can transfer their credentials by:

  • Passing the for-hire knowledge exam.
  • Applying for the for-hire endorsement at an Indiana BMV branch.

Renewal and Replacement

  • Renewal: The for-hire endorsement is valid for the same period as the driver's license. Renewals can be done at any BMV branch or online up to one year before expiration.
  • Replacement: If the license is lost, stolen, or mutilated, a replacement must be obtained in person at a BMV branch.
