Name Change on Your Idaho Driver’s License

3 min read

If you've recently changed your name due to marriage, divorce, or another legal reason, updating your name on your Idaho driver’s license is essential to keep your records current. Idaho law requires that you report a name change to the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 30 days. Here’s what you need to know to make the process smooth.

Before visiting the DMV, ensure you have the official documents verifying your name change. Acceptable documentation includes:

  • A certified marriage certificate
  • A certified divorce decree that includes the restored name
  • A court order authorizing the name change

These documents must be original or certified copies—photocopies are not accepted.

Steps to Change Your Name on Your Idaho License

  1. Update Your Name with the Social Security Administration (SSA)
The Idaho DMV verifies your legal name with the SSA database. Visit SSA.gov or your local SSA office to complete the update. Wait at least 24–48 hours after the SSA processes your change before visiting the DMV.

  2. Visit an Idaho DMV Office in Person
Name changes must be completed in person. Locate your nearest office using this guide: Find the Nearest Idaho DMV Office.

  3. Bring the Required Documents
    You'll need:

    • Proof of your legal name change (e.g., marriage certificate)
    • Current Idaho driver’s license or ID card
    • One document showing your updated name with the SSA
    • Additional identification if requested

For a complete list of acceptable documents, see What to Bring to the DMV for an Idaho License.

  4. Pay the Required Fee
Fees vary based on the type of license. For current rates, check Idaho DMV Fees for 2025 Explained.

  5. Receive a Temporary License
You’ll receive a temporary paper license valid for 30 days. Your new license with your updated name will be mailed to you.
