Updating Your Address with the Idaho DMV
If you've recently moved within Idaho, it's your legal responsibility to update your address with the Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Timely updates ensure that you receive important correspondence regarding your driver's license, vehicle registration, and any potential infractions. Failing to do so could result in missed renewal notices or even fines.
Who Needs to Update Their Address
Anyone holding a valid Idaho driver's license, ID card, or vehicle registration must notify the DMV of any change of residence within 30 days of moving. This requirement applies to:
- Drivers with a standard Idaho driver's license or ID card
- Vehicle owners with current Idaho registration
- New Idaho residents transferring licenses or registrations
How to Update Your Address
The Idaho DMV offers several methods to update your address, depending on what you're updating:
Online
The fastest way to update your address is through the Idaho Transportation Department's website. You can update the address for your driver's license and vehicle registration using their online services portal. You’ll need:
- Your current Idaho driver's license or ID card number
- The last four digits of your Social Security Number
- Your new address details
Note: You will not receive a new license or registration document automatically unless you specifically request one and pay the applicable fee.
In Person
You can also update your address at any DMV office in Idaho. Bring your current license and proof of your new address, such as:
- A lease or rental agreement
- A utility bill dated within the last 60 days
- A mortgage statement

By Mail
For those preferring mail, you can send a completed address change form to the Idaho DMV. Use Form ITD 3239, available on the Idaho DMV Forms page. Mail the form to:

PO Box 7129

Allow several weeks for processing.
Address Updates for Vehicle Registration vs. Driver’s License
Address changes for your driver's license and vehicle registration are separate processes, even though both can be updated online. If you own multiple vehicles, you must update the registration for each one individually.

What Happens After You Update
After updating, the DMV records your new address in their system. However, your current license or ID card will still display your old address unless you order a replacement card. If you wish to have your new address printed, you must apply for a duplicate license and pay the replacement fee.
If you’re also due for a license renewal, this is a good time to handle both at once. Visit How to Renew Your Idaho Driver’s License for more details.
Special Cases
New Residents
If you’re new to Idaho, you must apply for an Idaho license within 90 days (or 30 days if you hold a commercial license). See the steps for How to Get Your First Idaho Driver’s License to begin.
Voter Registration
Changing your address with the DMV does not automatically update your voter registration. Be sure to update your voter information separately through the Idaho Secretary of State’s website.
Penalties for Not Updating
Failure to notify the Idaho DMV of an address change within the required 30-day window may lead to:
- Delayed delivery of DMV notices
- Fines for missed renewal deadlines
- Legal complications if pulled over by law enforcement
Stay proactive and compliant by keeping your records up to date.
