What to Bring to the DMV for an Idaho License
Before heading to the DMV to obtain your Idaho driver’s license, make sure you have all the required documentation and information prepared. Whether you're applying for your first license, transferring an out-of-state license, or replacing a lost one, the Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has specific requirements that must be met to ensure a smooth application process.
Primary Identity Documents
You must provide proof of identity, which typically includes:
- Certified birth certificate issued by a U.S. state or territory
- Valid U.S. passport or passport card
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad
- Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship
These documents must be originals or certified copies—photocopies are not accepted.
Social Security Verification
To comply with federal and state identification laws, you need to present your Social Security number (SSN). Acceptable documents include:
- Social Security card (original)
- W-2 form
- Pay stub with full SSN visible
If you are not eligible for a Social Security number, you must provide proof of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration.
Proof of Idaho Residency
At least two documents that show your current Idaho residential address are required. These may include:
- Utility bills
- Lease or rental agreements
- Mortgage statements
- Idaho vehicle registration or title
- Bank or credit card statements
Documents must be recent and clearly show your name and Idaho address.
Legal Presence or Citizenship Status
If you're not a U.S. citizen, you must provide proof of lawful status. Acceptable documents include:
- Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
- Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
- Valid foreign passport with U.S. visa and I-94 form
The DMV uses the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to confirm immigration status.
Additional Requirements for Minors
Applicants under age 18 must also bring:
- Completed Parent or Guardian Consent Form
- Verification of school enrollment or graduation
- Proof of driver’s education completion (if applying for a first-time license)
These documents are essential in addition to the identity, SSN, and residency requirements.
When Transferring an Out-of-State License
Bring your:
- Current, valid out-of-state driver’s license
- Proof of Idaho residency
- Identity and SSN documentation
Depending on your driving history, you may be required to pass the vision, written, and road tests.
