Missouri School Bus Safety Law Overview

3 min read

Missouri law requires all drivers to exercise extreme caution when approaching a school bus, especially when it is stopped to pick up or drop off children. These laws are in place to protect students and ensure their safe travel between home and school.

When to Stop for a School Bus

Missouri drivers must stop when a school bus is displaying its flashing red warning lights and stop arm. This rule applies to both directions of traffic on two-lane roads and in certain situations on multi-lane roads:

  • Two-lane roads: Vehicles traveling in both directions must stop.
  • Multi-lane roads with no median: All traffic in both directions must stop.
  • Divided highways with a median or barrier: Only traffic following the bus must stop; oncoming traffic does not need to stop.

Drivers must remain stopped until the bus's lights stop flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn.

Penalties for Violating School Bus Laws

Failing to stop for a school bus in Missouri is a serious offense and may lead to:

  • A Class A misdemeanor charge
  • Fines up to $1,000
  • Points added to your driving record
  • Possible suspension of driving privileges

If a violation results in injury or death, penalties may escalate to felony charges.

Responsibilities of School Bus Drivers

Missouri law also outlines expectations for school bus drivers:

  • Activate flashing yellow lights 100 to 500 feet before a stop
  • Extend the stop arm and activate red lights when loading or unloading
  • Ensure children cross safely before resuming travel

To legally operate a school bus, drivers must obtain a special commercial driver's license (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements. See Missouri School Bus CDL Endorsement Steps for licensing requirements.

Additional Safety Reminders for Drivers

Even when a school bus is not present, Missouri drivers should always:

  • Watch for children near schools, crosswalks, and residential areas
  • Obey posted speed limits in school zones
  • Avoid distractions when driving near school zones, especially during peak hours

Missouri Revised Statutes Section 304.050 governs the rules and penalties related to school bus safety. Law enforcement agencies across the state prioritize school zone enforcement, particularly during the start and end of the school day.
