Minnesota CDL Endorsements Explained
To operate specialized commercial vehicles in Minnesota, drivers must add specific endorsements to their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Each endorsement certifies that a driver has the knowledge and skills to handle particular types of cargo or vehicles. Here's what each CDL endorsement means and how to obtain them in Minnesota.
H – Hazardous Materials (HazMat)
The HazMat endorsement is required to transport materials classified as hazardous under federal regulations. To get this endorsement, drivers must:
- Pass the HazMat knowledge test
- Undergo a TSA security threat assessment (background check and fingerprinting)
- Renew the TSA clearance every five years
More information can be found on the TSA HazMat Threat Assessment Program page.
N – Tank Vehicles
This endorsement is required for drivers operating vehicles designed to transport liquids or gases in tanks permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle. Key qualifications include:
- Passing the Tanker knowledge test
- Understanding surge effects and special handling for liquid cargo
X – Tanker and Hazardous Materials
Combines the N and H endorsements. Drivers must meet all qualifications for both HazMat and Tanker vehicles, including the TSA assessment.
T – Double/Triple Trailers
Required for drivers towing double or triple trailers. In Minnesota, triple trailers are typically restricted to certain highways or industrial use. To earn this endorsement, drivers must:
- Pass the Doubles/Triples knowledge test
- Demonstrate understanding of stability and braking techniques
P – Passenger Transport
This endorsement allows drivers to operate vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver. Requirements include:
- Passing the Passenger transport knowledge test
- Completing a skills test in a representative vehicle
- Undergoing a criminal background check

S – School Bus
Specific to school bus drivers, the S endorsement builds on the P endorsement. Additional requirements include:
- Passing the School Bus knowledge and skills tests
- Federal and state background checks, including a driving history review
- Training in loading and unloading procedures, emergency evacuations, and student management

Understanding Endorsement Restrictions
Minnesota may apply restrictions to a CDL if a driver fails to complete tests in certain types of vehicles or lacks medical clearance. Examples include:
- L – Air brakes not qualified
- E – Automatic transmission only
- Z – No full air brake system
It's important to train with and take your skills test in a vehicle that reflects the type of commercial vehicle you intend to drive. For help preparing, check out the Minnesota CDL Test Study Resources.
Staying Compliant
All endorsements must be renewed alongside your CDL. If your job involves seasonal or specialized transport (like farm or fishing vehicles), you may also be subject to unique licensing, as described in the Minnesota Farm Vehicle License Rules.
Failing to carry proper endorsements can result in serious penalties, including fines, CDL suspension, or loss of employment. Understanding and maintaining your endorsements ensures safe, legal operation across Minnesota roads.
