Minnesota CDL Endorsements Explained

To operate specialized commercial vehicles in Minnesota, drivers must add specific endorsements to their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Each endorsement certifies that a driver has the knowledge and skills to handle particular types of cargo or vehicles. Here's what each CDL endorsement means and how to obtain them in Minnesota.

H – Hazardous Materials (HazMat)

The HazMat endorsement is required to transport materials classified as hazardous under federal regulations. To get this endorsement, drivers must:

  • Pass the HazMat knowledge test
  • Undergo a TSA security threat assessment (background check and fingerprinting)
  • Renew the TSA clearance every five years

N – Tank Vehicles

This endorsement is required for drivers operating vehicles designed to transport liquids or gases in tanks permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle. Key qualifications include:

  • Passing the Tanker knowledge test
  • Understanding surge effects and special handling for liquid cargo

X – Tanker and Hazardous Materials

Combines the N and H endorsements. Drivers must meet all qualifications for both HazMat and Tanker vehicles, including the TSA assessment.

T – Double/Triple Trailers

Required for drivers towing double or triple trailers. In Minnesota, triple trailers are typically restricted to certain highways or industrial use. To earn this endorsement, drivers must:

  • Pass the Doubles/Triples knowledge test
  • Demonstrate understanding of stability and braking techniques

P – Passenger Transport

This endorsement allows drivers to operate vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver. Requirements include:

  • Passing the Passenger transport knowledge test
  • Completing a skills test in a representative vehicle
  • Undergoing a criminal background check

  • Passing the School Bus knowledge and skills tests

Understanding Endorsement Restrictions
