Changing Your Address on a Maryland License
If you've recently moved within Maryland or to the state, updating your address with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) is legally required. According to Maryland law, all licensed drivers must notify the MVA of a change in address within 30 days of moving. Failing to do so may result in missed renewal notices, fines, or other administrative issues.
Who Needs to Update Their Address
You must update your address if you:
- Move to a new residence within Maryland
- Move into Maryland from another state and already have a Maryland license
- Change your mailing address, even if your residence hasn't changed
This requirement applies to Class D driver's license holders, learners' permit holders, and commercial driver's license (CDL) holders.
How to Change Your Address
The Maryland MVA offers multiple ways to update your address:
Online
The fastest way is through the MVA Online Services. You'll need your driver's license number, date of birth, and last four digits of your Social Security Number. You can choose to receive a new license reflecting the updated address or simply update the record.
In Person
You can visit any MVA branch office. Bring your current driver's license and proof of your new address, such as a utility bill or lease agreement. Check Maryland MVA Office Locations and Hours before going to confirm hours and wait times.
By Mail
Complete and mail Form VR-005, available here, to the address listed on the form. This method is slower and not recommended if you need a quick update.
Required Documentation
To verify your new address, you may be asked to provide one of the following:
- Utility bill dated within 90 days
- Lease/rental agreement
- Mortgage statement
- Bank statement or official mail from a government agency
Ensure the document includes your full name and the new address.
Getting a New License
Updating your address does not automatically issue a new driver's license. If you'd like a new physical card reflecting the updated address, you can request one for a fee. See Class D Driver’s License Application Fees in Maryland for the latest cost.
For New Residents to Maryland
If you’ve just moved to Maryland from another state, you must apply for a Maryland driver's license within 60 days. This includes surrendering your out-of-state license and meeting state eligibility requirements. Learn more at MD Driver’s License Requirements by Age Group.
