What to Expect on the Indiana Driving Skills Test

3 min read

The Indiana driving skills test is the final step before obtaining your driver's license. Conducted by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), this test assesses your ability to operate a vehicle safely and responsibly under various real-world conditions. Understanding what the test covers and how you're evaluated can significantly increase your chances of passing on the first try.

Test Requirements and Scheduling

To take the driving skills test, you must:

  • Hold a valid Indiana learner’s permit
  • Have completed supervised driving hours (50 hours, including 10 at night)
  • Be at least 16 years and 90 days old with a completed driver education program, or 16 years and 270 days without one

Appointments for the skills test must be scheduled online through the Indiana BMV appointment system.

Before your appointment, ensure your vehicle is legally registered, insured, and in safe operating condition. You'll need to present the required documents, including your permit and log of supervised driving.

Components of the Test

The Indiana driving test is divided into two parts:

1. Vehicle Inspection

Before driving, the examiner checks whether you can:

  • Locate and operate vehicle controls (lights, wipers, defroster, hazard lights, etc.)
  • Demonstrate proper seat and mirror adjustments
  • Show proof of valid registration and insurance

2. Driving Performance Evaluation

This portion evaluates your ability to perform everyday driving tasks in a controlled and safe manner. Key components include:

Evaluation and Scoring

The examiner uses a scoring sheet to track performance, deducting points for:

  • Minor errors (e.g., incomplete stops, slight lane drift)
  • Major violations (e.g., failure to yield, running a red light)

Too many minor errors or any major violation may result in an automatic fail. The test typically lasts 15–20 minutes.

Tips for Success

  • Practice regularly under various conditions—day, night, rain, and highway
  • Review your supervised driving logs to ensure you meet state requirements
  • Take a Practice Test for Indiana Permit Exam to refresh traffic laws
  • Get plenty of rest before your test day and stay calm during the exam

Being well-prepared and informed will help you approach the Indiana driving skills test with confidence. Once you pass, you’ll be eligible for either a probationary or full license depending on your age. For more on this, review the Indiana Probationary License Guidelines.
