How to Apply for Illinois Temporary Event Plates

These plates serve as a unique promotional tool and are valid for a limited time surrounding the event.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for Temporary Event Plates in Illinois, the following conditions must be met:

  • Public Access: The event must be open to the general public.
  • Community Interest: The event should promote the interests of Illinois citizens.
  • Organizational Requirement: The applicant must be a civic organization or a similar entity recognized by the state.

Application Process

  1. Design Submission: Organizations must submit a proposed design for the license plate to the Illinois Secretary of State for approval. The design should reflect the event's theme and comply with state guidelines.
  2. Minimum Order: A minimum of 50 sets of plates must be ordered.
  3. Application Timeline: Applications should be submitted well in advance of the event to allow sufficient time for processing and manufacturing.
  4. Fees: The basic cost per set of two plates is $10. Additional costs may apply based on the number of colors in the design.
  5. Approval: Upon approval, the organization will be notified, and the plates will be manufactured accordingly.

Display and Validity

  • Display Period: Approved plates may be displayed on qualified vehicles for up to 60 days prior to midnight on the last day of the event.
  • Placement: The plates should be affixed to the rear of the vehicle in the space designated for permanent registration plates.
  • Compliance: Vehicles displaying Temporary Event Plates must comply with all other vehicle registration and insurance requirements as mandated by Illinois law.
