Idaho Learner’s Permit Restrictions and Rules
If you're a teen driver in Idaho or a parent guiding one, it's crucial to understand the specific rules tied to the state's learner’s permit. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has established regulations to ensure new drivers develop experience in a controlled and safe manner. These rules are designed to gradually introduce young drivers to the road under supervision before they gain full driving privileges.
Minimum Age and Permit Eligibility
In Idaho, teens can apply for a learner’s permit—officially called a Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP)—as early as age 14½. Before applying, they must meet these criteria:
- Provide proof of identity, residency, and legal presence in the U.S.
- Pass a vision test
- Have parental or guardian consent if under 18
- Pay the applicable permit fee
More on the application process can be found in this guide to getting an Idaho learner’s permit.
Supervised Driving Requirements
Once issued a SIP, the permit holder must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 hours occurring at night. The supervising driver must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Be seated in the front passenger seat at all times
Additional requirements for supervised driving are explained in Idaho Supervised Driving Requirements for Teens.
Driving Restrictions for Learner’s Permit Holders
Idaho imposes the following restrictions on all SIP holders:
- No unsupervised driving: SIP holders may only drive with a qualified supervising adult.
- No driving between sunset and sunrise unless the supervising adult deems it necessary for driving experience.
- Zero tolerance for alcohol: Drivers under 21 must not operate a vehicle with any measurable alcohol in their system.
- Passenger limitations: Only the supervising driver and immediate family members are allowed in the vehicle during practice driving.
- Electronic device ban: SIP holders are not permitted to use a cell phone or any electronic communication device while driving.
Duration and Validity of the SIP
The Supervised Instruction Permit is valid for up to 180 days, during which the required driving hours must be completed. After fulfilling these requirements and reaching age 15, drivers may schedule their skills test to move forward in the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) program.
Additional Considerations
