  • Be at least 18 years old for intrastate driving, 21 for interstate driving.
  • Hold a valid New Mexico driver license.
  • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency.
  • Have a clean driving record with no disqualifying offenses.

Review the New Mexico Driver’s License Eligibility Criteria for detailed eligibility rules before starting your application.

Required Documents

You will need to provide:

  • Your current New Mexico driver license
  • Proof of identity, Social Security number, and New Mexico residency
  • Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT physical)
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful status

If your address has recently changed, ensure you complete the Changing Address on NM Driver License Online before visiting your CDL testing location.

CDL Knowledge and Skills Testing

All CDL applicants must pass:

  • CDL General Knowledge Test
  • Applicable endorsement tests (Hazmat, Tanker, Passenger, etc.)
  • CDL Skills Test, including pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and on-road driving

Before testing, you will first need to get a New Mexico Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) by passing the required written tests. You can prepare using the New Mexico Driver’s Manual Download & Overview and relevant practice materials.

Once you hold your CLP for 14 days, you may schedule your CDL skills test at approved testing locations. To understand the paperwork needed at testing, review the NM CDL Testing & Application Form Requirements.

Medical Requirements

CDL applicants must meet Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) medical standards. You will need to:

  • Pass a DOT physical examination
  • Submit a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate
  • Self-certify your type of driving (interstate or intrastate)

For ongoing compliance and renewal requirements, refer to the CDL Renewal & Medical Requirements in New Mexico.

Fees and Payment

Fees vary depending on license class, endorsements, and testing needs. Payment is required for:

  • Knowledge and skills tests
  • CDL issuance fees
  • Endorsement fees (e.g., Hazmat background check)

Check the current fees on the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division CDL Fees page for accuracy before your visit.

Additional Tips

  • Study using updated CDL manuals and practice questions.
  • Arrive early for testing appointments with all documents and payment ready.
  • Confirm your testing location’s schedule in advance; some offer extended or mobile DMV services.
  • Use your CLP time to practice with a qualified CDL holder in the type of vehicle you intend to operate.

Applying for your CDL is a structured process that, when prepared for properly, positions you to enter New Mexico’s commercial driving workforce efficiently and legally.
