Supervised Driving Hours Requirement in NH

2 min read

If you are a teen working toward your first license in New Hampshire, you must complete supervised driving hours as part of the graduated licensing process. This helps build confidence and experience in various conditions before driving independently.

How Many Supervised Hours Are Required in NH?

New Hampshire requires at least 40 hours of supervised driving, with 10 hours driven at night before you can apply for your driver’s license under the Youth Operator License program. These hours must be logged with a parent, legal guardian, or licensed adult over 25 who can verify your practice time.

Supervised driving hours should include diverse conditions such as:

  • Rural, city, and highway roads
  • Driving during rain and light snow
  • Practicing safe night driving

For additional guidance, see How to Get a New Hampshire Learner’s Permit.

Parental Certification

Your parent or guardian must complete and sign the Certification of Supervised Driving form (DSMV 509) confirming you have completed the 40-hour minimum. False certification may result in denial of your license application.

Visit the NH DMV Official Forms page for current downloadable forms.

When Can You Drive During Supervised Hours?

In New Hampshire, you can begin supervised driving at 15 ½ years old with a licensed adult in the front seat, even without a learner’s permit, as the state does not issue a formal permit but requires parental consent and supervision.

You may not drive alone until you pass your road test and receive your Youth Operator License. For eligibility requirements, see New Hampshire Driver License Eligibility Explained.
