Proof of Identity for Nebraska License

3 min read

Before you can receive your Nebraska driver license, you must present acceptable proof of identity and lawful status to the Nebraska DMV. This is a critical step to confirm your identity and eligibility for driving privileges in the state.

Nebraska requires all applicants to provide a full legal name, date of birth, identity, lawful status in the United States, Social Security Number, and two documents proving Nebraska residency. If your name has changed due to marriage, divorce, or court order, you must provide legal documents verifying the name change.

Accepted Documents for Proof of Identity

Primary documents typically include:

  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
  • Certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  • Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card
  • Valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD)

For individuals without a U.S. passport or birth certificate, the DMV may accept alternative documentation, but all documents must be original or certified copies.

For a detailed list of acceptable identity documents, visit the Nebraska DMV official site.

Proof of Social Security Number

You must provide one of the following to verify your Social Security Number:

  • Social Security card
  • W-2 form
  • Pay stub with your full SSN

If you are not eligible for a Social Security Number, you will need to provide documentation from the Social Security Administration confirming ineligibility.

Proof of Nebraska Residency

Two separate documents are required to prove Nebraska residency, such as:

  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Lease or rental agreement
  • Nebraska vehicle registration

Documents must display your name and current Nebraska residential address.

What to Expect During Your DMV Visit

Before heading to your local DMV office, ensure you have all required documentation organized. You will have your photo taken, and your documents will be verified for authenticity.

If you are applying for a first-time driver license, you must also meet Eligibility for Nebraska Driver License requirements, and those under 18 should review the Age Requirements for Nebraska Learner Permit.

Applicants should also understand the Nebraska Learner Permit Application Process if starting with a permit and be aware of the Driving Restrictions With Nebraska Permit before proceeding toward a full license.

Additional Notes

  • All documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  • If your legal presence documents are temporary, your Nebraska license will reflect this temporary status and may have a limited validity period.
  • The DMV will retain copies of your documents as part of your application record.

Careful preparation with the correct identity documents ensures your Nebraska driver license application process is smooth and compliant with all state and federal requirements.
