Updating Your Address with the Iowa DMV

3 min read

If you've recently moved within Iowa, it's essential to update your address with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to ensure you receive important correspondence and maintain compliance with state laws.

Iowa law mandates that you notify the DOT of any address change within 30 days of moving. This requirement applies to both your mailing and residential addresses.

Updating Your Mailing Address

You can update your mailing address without obtaining a new driver's license or ID card. This update ensures that you receive all official communications from the DOT.

Online Update

  • Visit the Iowa DOT's myMVD portal to update your mailing address online.
  • Note: This change does not update the address displayed on your physical driver's license or ID card.

By Mail

  • Complete the Change of Address Notice.
  • Mail the completed form to: Motor Vehicle Division Iowa Department of Transportation P.O. Box 9204 Des Moines, IA 50306-9204

Updating Your Residential Address (Physical License)

To update the address on your physical driver's license or ID card, you must obtain a replacement card.

In-Person Update

  • Visit any Iowa driver's license issuance site.
  • Bring your current driver's license or ID card.
  • No additional documentation is typically required; however, the DOT will electronically verify your new address.
  • A $10 fee applies for the replacement card.

Vehicle Registration Address Update

Address changes for vehicle registration must be handled separately.

  • Contact your local County Treasurer's Office to update your vehicle registration address.
  • This process cannot be completed online and must be done in person.

Special Considerations for Safe at Home Program Participants

If you're enrolled in Iowa's Safe at Home program:

  • You must update your address in person at a driver's license issuance site.
  • Bring your current driver's license or ID card and your Safe at Home participant card.
  • Inform the staff that you're a Safe at Home participant to ensure your address is handled appropriately.
  • A $10 fee applies for the replacement card.

For more information, visit the Safe at Home Program page.
